There’s honest work a homeowner can do: sweep fresh polymeric sand into open joints after wetting the surface, or reset a single loose paver that hasn’t settled into the base. Use a shop vac to clear the cavity, add a cup of sharp sand, tap the paver level with a rubber mallet, and mist lightly.

Where DIY goes wrong is base repair. Excavating settled areas requires removing multiple courses, regrading and compacting the base in lifts no thicker than six inches, then re-bedding with consistent one-inch screeded sand. Without a plate compactor and laser level, the repair settles again within two seasons. Worse, cutting pavers with an angle grinder and a masonry blade throws silica dust that’ll damage your lungs - we run wet saws with vacuum extraction for a reason.
