Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter doesn’t manufacture pavers themselves. They manufacture the substrate systems and edge profiles that premium paver installations depend on. The parts we replace fall into three categories, and identifying the right match matters because Schluter specs are exact.

Membrane systems: Schluter-DITRA (uncoupling), DITRA-HEAT (uncoupling plus electric heat cable), and DITRA-XL (thicker for transitions). Check the orange fleece side for the printed product name and lot number. DITRA-HEAT requires the DT-IP cable with specific spacing; mixing cable generations voids the Schluter warranty and creates hot spots.

Edge profiles: Schluter-BARA (aluminum), BARA-RK (with perforated anchor leg), RENO (transition profiles), and SCHIENE (straight edge finishing). BARA-RK is spec’d for paver-over-concrete applications in Irvine’s seismic zone because the perforated leg allows mechanical bond. Standard BARA without the RK suffix relies on adhesive alone, which fails faster where substrate shifts.

Drainage and movement: Schluter-KERDI-DRAIN for permeable paver systems, and DILEX movement joints. The KERDI-DRAIN flange height must match the paver plus setting bed thickness exactly; a 1/8-inch mismatch causes standing water.

OEM Schluter parts are our default. Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Pavers rocking or sounding hollow when stepped on. This means the Schluter membrane has delaminated from the substrate, creating a void. In Irvine’s Adelo soil zones, clay expansion and contraction breaks the mortar bond; the paver loses support and the membrane can no longer transfer load.
• Cracking along straight lines that follow control joints. The Schluter movement joint (DILEX) has either compressed solid with debris or was omitted during install. Without the designed 3/8-inch compressible joint, thermal expansion forces the paver to crack predictably.
• Rust staining at paver edges. Schluter-BARA profiles are aluminum, but the fastening screws are steel. When the membrane seal fails, moisture reaches the screw and iron oxide migrates to the paver face. We’ve replaced edging in University Park where this staining reached three courses inward.
• Heaving or settlement at the garage threshold. The Schluter-RENO transition profile has separated from its substrate anchor. This is common where the garage slab and driveway slab expand at different rates; the profile’s anchoring leg shears or the adhesive bed fails.
• Electric cable fault in heated driveways. DITRA-HEAT systems show error codes or cold zones. The orange cable has fractured at a turn or where a paver edge compressed it. Cable location must be verified with Schluter’s own thermal camera protocol; guessing destroys the cable.
